How to find the right accountant

Hiring a good professional accountant that suits you and your business is one of the best value-for-money investments you can make in your business.

The right accountant can help you avoid costly mistakes, reduce compliance risk and provide peace of mind that tax obligations are met on time.

Accountants can also offer a range of other advisory services that can help improve your cash flow and provide valuable insights into your financial position.

Hiring an accountant can be a daunting task, especially when you’re starting in business. You must find an accountant that understands you and your business.

That’s why we’ve created this handy guide with some of the key things you should look for when choosing your accountant.

What should I look for in an accountant?

  • Are they qualified? They should be registered with a recognised accountancy body such as the AAT (Accounting Technicians), the ICAEW (Chartered Accountants), the ACCA (Certified Accountants), or ICAS (Scottish Accountants).
  • Do they have experience relevant to you and your industry? Some accountants will have experience in large corporations but not with start-ups and SME’s and vice versa. If you’re a tradesperson, make sure they can help file CIS for you and any contractors.
  • Do they offer the services you need? Finding the right accountant who can do everything you need will save you time and money in the long run. Passing on all aspects of your accounts is important to business owners; you only want one accountant, so make sure you ask about every service you’ll need.
  • Do they talk in a way you can understand? Accountants have a reputation when it comes to how they look, speak and act. That’s all changing, though. More accountants realise that most people don’t want the jargon and need someone to sit down and explain things in an easy-to-understand way. Finding an accountant that isn’t stuffy and can help explain things easily is important for busy entrepreneurs who want to get on with their day.
  • Does their method of working work for you? Are they friendly yet professional? Do they have an easy-to-use online system where you can see what’s going on and upload your documents easily and securely? An accountant isn’t someone you need to trust blindly, and you should be able to talk to them about any of your business money worries; they are here to help you, after all!
  • Do they have any testimonials or reviews? Getting a recommendation is the best way to find an accountant but checking out the website or reviews on certain review sites are also recommended. Do their reviews come from other businesses like yours? Are they good reviews? Researching the accountant you wish to use is always a good idea before appointing one.
